A Breakthrough in Glaucoma Care: Introducing DSLT

We are excited to offer Direct Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (DSLT), an advanced approach to lowering intraocular pressure for patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Unlike traditional SLT, which requires direct contact with the eye, DSLT is delivered externally without a contact lens. This non-invasive technology uses precise laser energy to stimulate the eye’s natural drainage system in just 2.4 seconds—helping to reduce eye pressure while minimizing downtime and discomfort.

DSLT may be used as a first-line treatment or alongside glaucoma medications, giving patients and providers more flexibility in customizing care.

Welcoming Dr. Joanne Choi to Our Team

We are proud to welcome Dr. Joanne Choi, a Board-Certified Ophthalmologist and Fellowship-Trained Cornea Specialist, to the San Francisco Eye Institute medical staff.

Dr. Choi provides comprehensive eye care as well as advanced treatment for cataracts, corneal disease, and vision correction.

Her clinical interests include:

• Cataract surgery with advanced intraocular lens technology
  
• Corneal transplantation
  
• Treatment of Fuchs Corneal Dystrophy and keratoconus
  
• Refractive surgery evaluations, including LASIK, PRK, EVO ICL, and refractive lens exchange

Dr. Choi completed her fellowship at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital and her ophthalmology residency at the Kresge Eye Institute at Wayne State University. She is actively involved in ophthalmic research, has presented at national conferences, and is a member of leading professional organizations including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Cornea Society, and Women in Ophthalmology.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Choi is deeply committed to community outreach, providing vision screenings and care to underserved populations—a value that strongly aligns with our mission.

To better serve our referring providers, we’ve launched a new online referral system designed to make the referral process faster, easier, and more efficient. With just a few clicks, providers can securely submit patient referrals, helping streamline care coordination and reduce administrative delays. This upgrade improves communication and helps ensure patients are seen quickly and appropriately.

We’ve also expanded our online booking capabilities, making it easier than ever for patients to schedule appointments on their own time. Whether booking a routine eye exam, glaucoma consultation, or surgical evaluation, patients can now request appointments 24/7—no phone call required.
