As a cataract and refractive surgeon at San Francisco Eye Institute, Dr. Steven Cohen has helped thousands of patients reclaim their vision. But when he developed cataracts himself, the experience became personal. Faced with choosing his own cataract surgery solution, Dr. Cohen selected the RxSight® Light Adjustable Lens® (LAL®)—a cutting-edge option that offers the rare ability to customize vision after surgery.
“My vision is now ultra-high definition. It’s so clear, it’s almost like a microscope,” Dr. Cohen shared in an article for Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today.
What is the Light Adjustable Lens?
Cataract surgery involves removing the eye’s cloudy natural lens and replacing it with a clear artificial one called an intraocular lens (IOL). The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL®) is the first and only FDA-approved intraocular lens that allows vision to be adjusted after cataract surgery. Once implanted, patients undergo a series of painless UV light treatments that fine-tune the lens power to meet their individual visual goals.
This technology offers a personalized solution for patients who want to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses—and achieve truly optimized vision.
Dr. Cohen’s Treatment Journey

Dr. Cohen’s surgery was performed by his colleague, Dr. Margaret Liu, at San Francisco Eye Institute. As a surgeon, Dr. Cohen knew that even the most precisely calculated lens power can sometimes fall short of a patient’s ideal vision. The Light Adjustable Lens gave him the ability to refine the outcome with post-operative adjustments—delivering the clarity he had always strived to give his own patients.
“I would recommend the LAL to anyone who’s contemplating cataract surgery and really wants to be glasses-free most of the time,” he said. “To achieve your best uncorrected vision, the LAL is the way to go.”
