Understanding Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common retinal condition that affects the macula — the central portion of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. The macula allows you to read, recognize faces, drive, and perform everyday tasks that require central focus.

AMD typically develops gradually and primarily affects adults over the age of 50. While it does not cause complete blindness, it can significantly impact central vision and independence if left unmanaged.1

There are two primary forms of macular degeneration:

  • Dry AMD (non-neovascular AMD) – the more common form
  • Wet AMD (neovascular AMD) – a less common but more rapidly progressive form

Valeda light therapy is designed specifically for certain stages of dry AMD.

What Is Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration?

Dry AMD accounts for approximately 80–90% of macular degeneration cases.2 It occurs when light-sensitive cells in the macula gradually become damaged and small deposits called drusen accumulate beneath the retina.

Common symptoms of dry AMD may include:

  • Blurred or fuzzy central vision
  • Difficulty reading or recognizing faces
  • Increased need for brighter lighting
  • Distortion of straight lines
  • Reduced contrast sensitivity

In its early stages, dry AMD may cause minimal noticeable symptoms. However, as the condition progresses, central vision can become increasingly compromised.

Until recently, management options were limited to monitoring, nutritional supplementation in appropriate patients, and lifestyle modifications. Valeda offers a new, non-invasive approach aimed at supporting retinal function.

What Is Valeda Light Therapy?

Valeda is the first and only FDA-authorized light-based treatment shown in clinical studies to improve visual function in patients with dry AMD.

The system uses a therapeutic approach known as photobiomodulation (PBM) — the application of specific wavelengths of light to stimulate cellular activity within the retina.

Unlike injections or surgery, Valeda is:

  • Completed over a series of scheduled sessions
  • Non-invasive
  • Performed in-office
  • Comfortable and well-tolerated

How Valeda Works

The Valeda Light Delivery System administers controlled pulses of three therapeutic wavelengths:

  • Red light
  • Near-infrared light
  • Yellow light

These light wavelengths are delivered to targeted areas of the retina and are designed to:

  • Support mitochondrial function in retinal cells
  • Enhance cellular energy production
  • Reduce oxidative stress
  • Improve overall retinal performance

By supporting cellular health at the level of the retina, photobiomodulation aims to improve visual function in appropriately selected dry AMD patients.

What to Expect During Treatment

Valeda therapy is performed in our San Francisco office in a relaxed clinical setting. Each session is brief and painless, and patients remain seated comfortably during treatment.

A typical treatment protocol involves multiple sessions scheduled over several weeks. Your ophthalmologist will determine whether you are a candidate and outline a personalized treatment plan based on the stage and characteristics of your dry AMD.

Is Valeda Right for You?

Valeda is intended for patients diagnosed with certain stages of dry AMD. A comprehensive retinal evaluation is necessary to determine candidacy.

During your consultation at San Francisco Eye Institute, we will:

  • Perform detailed retinal imaging
  • Assess the stage of your macular degeneration
  • Review your medical history
  • Discuss realistic expectations and potential benefits

Our priority is helping you make informed decisions about your long-term visual health.
